Yarriambiack Secures $78,500 for Local Road Safety Initiatives
Yarriambiack Shire Council has secured $78,500 in funding from the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) to deliver two important road safety initiatives across the Shire.
The funding forms part of the TAC Local Government Grant Program, which is supporting $3 million of council-led road safety projects across 39 Victorian councils. The statewide program is supporting initiatives including safer pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, road safety strategies and radar-enabled Variable Message Signs.
Yarriambiack Shire Council will receive:
$48,500 to develop the Yarriambiack Shire Council Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan 2028-2032. The project will analyse crash, infrastructure risk, traffic and speed data and include community and stakeholder engagement to identify road safety priorities and high-risk locations across the municipality. The Strategy will establish an evidence-based framework to guide future road safety improvements and investment.
$30,000 for the Yarriambiack Shire School Zone and Town Entries VMS Speed Management project. Council will purchase a radar-enabled Variable Message Sign and rotate it through schools, town entrances, events and rural road locations. The sign will promote safer speeds while collecting vehicle speed data to help identify problem areas and guide future road safety initiatives.
The VMS project will also involve collaboration with Victoria Police, with radar information used to help identify speeding locations and support targeted road safety activities.
Council CEO Tammy Smith said the funding would help Council take both an immediate and longer-term approach to improving road safety.
"Road safety is particularly important in a large rural municipality like Yarriambiack, where our communities rely heavily on the road network every day."
"This funding will allow Council to better understand where our road safety risks are, while also giving us another practical tool to encourage safer speeds around our towns, schools and other locations."
"Importantly, the information gathered through these projects will help Council make evidence-based decisions and strengthen our case when seeking funding for future road safety improvements."
Both projects align with the Victorian Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030 and the Safe System approach, which focuses on safer roads, safer speeds, safer vehicles and safer road users.
The projects are scheduled to commence in March 2027, with the Road Safety Strategy and Action Plan expected to be adopted by Council by March 2028 and the VMS program operating across the Shire during the project period.
