Residents and landowners are encouraged to seek advice from Gannawarra Shire Council before removing, destroying or lopping native vegetation on their property.
In many circumstances, a planning permit is required under the
Planning and Environment Act 1987
and the Gannawarra Planning Scheme to remove, destroy or lop native vegetation. While some exemptions may apply, these are limited and should not be assumed.
"Native vegetation is one of Gannawarra's greatest environmental assets. It provides habitat for our unique wildlife, supports healthy ecosystems and contributes to the rural landscapes that make our Shire such a special place to live and work," Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.
"Most landowners want to do the right thing, but many are unaware that removing native vegetation may require a planning permit. Contacting Council before commencing works can provide clarity, save time and help avoid potential penalties."
Council encourages landowners to seek advice before undertaking works involving native trees, shrubs, grasses and other indigenous vegetation. Activities such as clearing fence lines, creating access tracks, undertaking earthworks or removing trees for property maintenance may require planning approval depending on the circumstances.
"Council is committed to protecting native vegetation while supporting landowners to understand and meet their planning obligations," Mr Rollinson said.
"We encourage anyone considering vegetation removal to contact Council early so we can provide advice on the planning requirements and any applicable exemptions."
Unauthorised removal of native vegetation can result in compliance action and significant penalties under Victorian planning legislation.
