New Welcome to Country video premieres

A new version of the Gannawarra Welcome to Country video was premiered during a special community event held on Friday, 20 March.

More than 40 people gathered at The Glasshouse, Kerang for the first official screening of the video and to celebrate the children, young people and Elders involved in its development.

Developed by the Kerang Elders and Leaders Group, local Aboriginal community, Gannawarra Shire Council, Mallee District Aboriginal Services and Northern District Community Health, the video pays respect to the Welcome to Country custom of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and acknowledging their ongoing connection to culture and Country.

"It was fantastic to see so many people involved with the development of the Gannawarra's new Welcome to Country video attend the premiere," Council Chief Executive Officer, Geoff Rollinson said.

"Council is pleased to have worked with the Kerang Elders and Leaders Group and local Aboriginal community to develop this new Gannawarra Welcome to Country video, which represents the current Aboriginal community, particularly children, young people and Elders.

"The video incorporates Barapa language and promotion of landscapes and cultural practices that provide a learning opportunity for all."

Filming of the new video occurred at Lake Meran in September 2025, bringing together Elders, children and young people to share a day of cultural activities.

The premiere of the video also coincided with the opening of a photographic exhibition featuring 25 professional images taken at the filming day, which will be on display in The Glasshouse until Friday, 10 April.

The video is now available to view online at

, and will be used in instances where an Elder is not available to conduct a Welcome to Country, or where it is impractical to have an Elder from that Country attend to conduct a Welcome, such as at Council's monthly meetings.

The revised Gannawarra Welcome to Country Video Clip and photographic exhibition was funded by Emergency Recovery Victoria as part of the 2022 Flood Recovery Program, funded jointly by the Victorian and Commonwealth Government funding under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
