Council to assess Macorna land sale interest
Gannawarra Shire Council will write to all owners of land within the former Macorna estate area to determine interest regarding the option of surrendering these parcels of land to Council.
Councillors adopted a recommendation at the February 2026 Council meeting to obtain a formal valuation of all properties within the subdivision, bordered by Kerang-Macorna and Macorna-Pyramid roads, and to write to these landowners outlining the option of surrendering their land to Council.
The decision follows on from the adoption of the
Surrender of Land
policy in November 2025 and approval for Council staff to recover rates and charges for 49 properties across the municipality that have been outstanding for more than three years - 27 of which are within Macorna.
"While working through the debt collection process, ratepayers for properties in the former Macorna Estate have expressed an interest in transferring this land back to Council. Landowners of four additional properties within this estate have also expressed an interest in transferring their land back to Council, resulting in this process," Mayor Garner Smith said.
Council will use the information provided by the estate's landowners and the outcomes of the formal valuation process to determine the next steps in the process, including whether to take on ownership of land at this location, considering the assessment criteria listed in the
Surrender of Land
policy.
"Obtaining information regarding the value of the properties in the estate and interest from landowners in relation to the future of these sites will provide Council with guidance when determining whether to take on ownership of these parcels of land and, if so, the future of these sites," Mayor Smith said.
