Regional Victorians will now be sleeping with one eye open following the Allan Labor Governments last-minute introduction of new compulsory acquisition powers for transmission line easements, before environmental and planning approvals are even complete.

The new laws allow the government, transmission firms, and distribution companies to compulsorily acquire farmland for power line projects while an Environmental Effects Statement (EES) is underway.

The Nationals' Member for Mildura, Jade Benham, slammed the move as a blatant attack on farmers and regional communities once again.

"This is an absolute abuse of power," Ms Benham said. "The biggest threat to farming in this nation right now is the Australian Labor Party."

Ms Benham, who contributed to the parliamentary debate on the amendments, said the rushed legislation bypasses environmental and integrity safeguards, puts taxpayers at risk, and further erodes trust between government, power companies, and local communities

"Seizing land before the EES is complete is a blatant land grab," Ms Benham said. "Farmers' rights are being ignored and communities have no say. It is clear the Allan Labor Government has no regard for farmers, landowners or rural communities."

"Regional Victoria deserves fair, lawful, and respectful infrastructure planning. Labor's methods are only adding to the uncertainly and fear among communities. Farmers are doing it tough and they can only take so much. This is an extra burden they shouldn't have to bear.

"Make no mistake, a Nationals and Liberals Government will repeal this legislation and return a voice to regional Victoria. Labor cannot continue to bulldoze through our communities. It is time for a government that cares for all Victorians."
